It was interesting hearing how everyone's groupd have gone with narrowing their questions. One group in particular had given everyone quite specific questions to research and I think that this will prove to be the easiest way to get into this project.

At the end of class today, we were all given specific areas to go away and research. Jihan, Fuzz & Mel are all looking at the digital methods and advertising strategies; Steph is looking at prime time TV and the effects of advertising; and I am looking at how digital television has developed in the UK as they are far ahead of us in their technology.

WEEK FOUR

This week our group met to discuss our group brief and contract. I think that this assignment was helpful in assisting us to work out where we want to go with our project. We came out with the primary question:

"What is the effect of PDR use on "prime time Tv" and it's advertisers? "

And the secondary questions:

"What new digital methods wil advertisers employ to reach their target markets?"
& "Will the benefits of this new technology outweigh the potential problems?"

I think that it is hard to write up a contract because we are not used to governing our own action and consequence systems. I feel like it's a bit unclear as to what exactly we are allowed to put into our contract. We have set a 'two strikes, you're out' kind-of policy, but no final consequences apart from mark deduction.
It's hard to know exactly where we want to go with this project as we need to do more research, and I think this will have a direct impact on our question as the process continues.
Other than that, I'm really happy with the brief and contract as I think that they set out as clear-a guidelines as we can possibly have at this point in time.

WEEK THREE

Getting into Groups.

This weeks we all went around the room and talked about questions and topic areas that we are thinking of focusing on. After everyone said their questions, we tried to break them down into different areas, so that we can start forming groups. My idea formed around the advent of digital media forms, in particular, the interactivity that digital television provides.
My topic feel into the subsection interactivity and a few others who were looking at a similar area were put in that same category. Jihan in particular is wanting to look at the effect of digital television on advertising and that is an area I am quite interested in.
We got into a group all interested in looking at the same sort of area and agreed to go away and look at a more specific side of the topic.

I have Foxtel IQ at home, and it has changed my families viewing habits a lot. We now all pre-record and series link all the shows that we want to watch and fast-forward through all the ads. I think that as this technology spreads, so will the way in which we watch TV.
http://www.foxteliq.com.au/

More info on public perception of Foxtel IQ.

WEEK TWO

The guest lecturer in the tutorial gave me a good indication of where I want to go with my research. It was a great way to start exploring issues that are important to me and my country in the context of Media. I guess I've never had to isolate and look at the Media Industry in Australia like that, even though I've been studying it for the last five years! I think the question I liked best was "In a couple of sentences briefly describe the one thing that people outside the Media sector don't know or understand about it." I find myself all the time dicussing the Media with my friends who don't study it, I think it's a natural part of conversation. I get frustrated so much, because people think that studying Media means there couldn't be a lot to study or that it's clear and simple. This question clarified for me that there is a lot that we need to question about the Media and the way it works in Australia and also gave me some valid points to raise in the next dsicussion with my friends!
I am definitely headed more in the direction of looking at television as a part of my question as opposed to other media forms.

WEEK ONE

This blog is a part of my assessment for Media Industries, my 3rd year subject at RMIT. I've never done a blog before, so bear with me if it's a little basic.
I guess I am hoping to get from this subject a greater understanding of the actual way that the Media Industry works, both through my research and my own placements. I am particularly interested in film and TV production, and I guess I feel a little daunted by the industry at large, so maybe this subject will give it a more human side.
I'm interested in research a lot of different areas, advertising, digital television, production processes, funding in Australia, the development of web technologies and I would also love to explore new areas that I haven't yet thought about. Maybe because I haven't heard of them yet. I guess I'm open to suggestion when it comes to my research area.
